August Calliarts - Monoline and Single Line Lettering

 Dear Members and Followers,

This month we appear to be on the straight and narrow while we investigate the world of Monoline and Single Line Lettering with Valerie Keevers.

Monoline and Single Line are modern alphabets used for fun sayings, a name, cards, small quotes, posters etc.  They are fun and relaxing to do; nothing hard just playing with letters.

We will look at different styles in this Calliart afternoon.

Requirements

·       Any monoline nib and pen holder you have.  Monoline nibs are round and come in many sizes, the small ones are suitable for the class.  (The square variety are much harder to use.)

·       If using the monoline nibs you will need to bring ink or paints.

·       Back Fine Liners 0.05.  Staedtler, Coptic, Uni-Pin or any other type you have.

·       Coloured Fine Liners are optional.  Officeworks carry Staedtler Triplus Fineliners in multiple colours.

·       Pencils HB and 2B.

August Calliarts - Pointed Gothic

 Dear Members and Followers,

If you like Gothic scripts, then this Calliarts workshop is for you.  The version of Pointed Gothic that I will be teaching is based on a 16th Century Flemish hand.  It is written with a 50-60 degree pen angle, which gives a Gothic window shape to some letters.  It is an elegant hand, which lends itself to some flourishing.

Materials List:

Usual calligraphy gear
Broad Edge nib size – William Mitchell 2, Speedball 3, Brause 2 or similar
Layout pad
Ink or gouache of your choice
An A4 sheet of tracing paper

August Calliarts - Back to Basics

 Dear Members and Followers,

This workshop is aimed at our newer members and those wanting to remind themselves of good calligraphic practices.

While we learn a hand or technique each month, many of us have not covered the basics of calligraphy or may like a refresher, so we will be looking at calligraphic terms and what they mean in a practical sense, how to use our pens and inks and everything in-between. We really will be getting back to basics, so think of this as Calligraphy 101. We will also work through a series of exercises to help you understand more about this art form and its associated terms.
It was suggested at our Meeting last month that if any Member who wishes to come on the 12th but do their own Calligraphy work on the day instead of the Back to Basics, catch up with other members and a cup or two of tea/coffee that a fee of $10 to help cover Hall Hire costs would be charged instead of the $20 for this Session.

Materials List:

·        Pen holders

·        A variety of sizes of nibs – small to large (if possible one brand, if you don’t have one brand, don’t worry         but you must have a range of sizes, 5 different size nibs is excellent)

·        Ink or gouache – different colours

·        Gouache – bring a form of palate to mix them on

·        Ink – bring small container/s to decant your ink into

·        Water containers

·        Brushes to load your gouache with (if you are using gouache)

·        Ruler

·        Eraser

·        Graphite pencil

·        Layout pad

·        Notebook & Pen to take notes

·        1 quote that means something to you, as you’ll be using it a lot

·        If using Artline Calligraphy felt-tip pens please bring a range of sizes

 Date:                 Saturday, 12 August 2023

Time:               1.00pm – 4.00pm

Cost:                $20.00 – Members, $25.00 – Non-Members

Revisiting a Classic - Shamrock with Gloria

 Dear Members and Followers,

For the August Calliarts we are revisiting an old favourite in Shamrock.

Shamrock is an open style of lettering with a minimum of pen manipulation and no serifs or flourishes. Alan Cornwall in ‘The Australian students lettering book’ introduced it as “a style with roots in Gaelic language”. Kaye E. Frost in ‘Alphabets for calligraphers letters and design’ described it as “based on a type originally designed by Alan Withers”, so take your pick!

This letterform has very clear distinct letters and is usually written with a chisel edge nib.  It is also useful and very successful for brush lettering.

Copyrighted Gloria Scott

Materials List:

·         chisel nibs, Speedball 3 or Mitchell 2½

·         plus the usual calligraphy gear and a guide line page to suit your nib

Shamrock is written at a pen angle of 25 to 30 degrees, with a body height of 4 pen widths, ascenders 2 P/W and decenders 3 P/W.

Batarde for Calliart and Workshop

Dear Members and Followers,

We are still able to offer a Calliarts afternoon and a mini workshop for August, so we would love to see you.

The Batarde script is a generic term for a cursive writing of mixed Gothic parentage, used as a parallel script for less prestigious works, it developed into a variety of scripts in their own right eg. Bastarda, Bastard script, Secretary Hand and Schwabacher.  Speed was important but letter forms still had to be impressive, so some variations of script developed many loops and linking letters.  They covered the Gothic era from 12th to 16th Centuries.  These French, German and English scripts give some quite modern styles for you to use in Calligraphy today yet still retain their authenticity.

Requirements for Calliart and Workshop.
General Calligraphic gear…assorted sized Chisel Pens any maker.
A3 pad.  Pencil, Ruler and Eraser.
Ink or Gouache /Watercolours.
Water jar.

World Calligraphy Day

Dear Members and Followers,

Happy World Calligraphy Day!

From Calligraphy Southscribes, Inc.
16 August 2017

VISIT TO SEE THE MARY ROSE SCROLL

Sydney sparkled on a sunny winter’s day as seven members made their way to the Australian National Maritime Museum’s Library at Wharf 7, Darling Harbour to see the Mary Rose Scroll.  The scroll is the work of four calligraphers from the Australian Society of Calligraphers and/or Calligraphy Southscribes, and was produced during the 1994 Mary Rose exhibition.  The Mary Rose was one of Henry VIII’s warships which sank in 1545 and was salvaged in 1982.

Calligraphers Rod Byatt, Loretta Casaceli, Judi Dong and Joy Marden worked in shifts on the scroll for a month, with visitors to the exhibition watching on.  When the scroll was completed it was put on display for the duration of the exhibition, after which it was packed away.  However, earlier this year it was resurrected, much like the Mary Rose, and placed on display in the Museum’s library.

The large work consists of three distinct sections.  The first gives the history of the Tudor succession to the throne and is written in an Italic hand in black ink; the second section, outlining the life of Henry VIII, is written in a Batard script in green gouache, while the third describes the fate of the Mary Rose, written in a Gothicised Italic in black ink.  Artwork on the scroll ranges from subtle columns of Tudor roses and other flora to bold heraldic and other symbols of the Tudors and Henry’s six wives.  The colours are still vibrant and only the gilding is showing minor deterioration.

We marvelled at the amount of work that must have gone into this striking work.  The library staff was happy to let us spend as much time as we wished studying the scroll and assured us that if the library ever moves from its current premises the scroll will be going with them.

Thank you Mirielle for all your hard work in organising a most enjoyable outing.

August 2015 Meeting Summary

Workshops: The next workshop is on Saturday 15th August, Running Bookhand with Gloria Scott. There has been a less than ideal response to this workshop and I do urge you to consider booking in. Runnning book hand is a very good script to have in your repertoire, it is a lovely script, quite versatile and not too difficult.
The next Lettering Course commences on 2nd September, Rustica with Valerie Keevers. This is historically a very interesting and important script, so again, do consider booking in for this as it is not often taught.

25th Anniversary : Next year we will be celebrating our 25th Anniversary which is quite an achievement for a small organisation. We would welcome your suggestions as to how to mark this occasion both artistically and socially. Please put your thinking caps on and if you have any brilliant ideas send them off to our President. Patricia patriciamoody1@bigpond.com
Magazine: An e-magazine will be coming out in September, if you have anything to contribute or have seen an interesting article on the web please email it to Patricia patriciamoody1@bigpond.com
Word of the Month: it is pleasing to see some of newer members taking part in this. It is a challenge to do something interesting with just one word but we are receiving some very interesting and imaginative pieces of work. You can of course write that one word as many times as you like. Keep up the good work and those of you who have not yet participated do consider it, you can join in any time. Just remember the criteria. The word for September is rhythm. Have fun!
Social Activities: Seven of us went to the Maritime Museum on Monday to view the Mary Rose Scroll which was most interesting and hopefully it will remain on display. An enormous amount of work went into it and a great feather in the cap of those Southscibes who completed it. Thanks to Mirielle for arranging our visit. Afterwards we had a very nice lunch in Darling Harbour.
Out next social activity is the tour of the QVB is confirmed for Monday September 14th. The time to be advised but will be around 10.30/11 am followed by brunch/lunch. Mirielle will check and confirm time.
A tour of Victoria Barracks is proposed for early next year – probably March.
Calliart: The next Calliart is on the 12th September - a simply sewn pamphlet book with a folded cover which is a handy size
