CALLIGRAPHY SOUTHSCIBES SUMMARY for October 2015

Workshops
There are 7 bookings for the Jerusalem hand on 17th October so that will go ahead There are 4 bookings at present for the next lettering course, Colour Calligraphy commencing on the 21st October, it was decided that this would go ahead but owing to unforeseen circumstances it will be reduced to 4 weeks and Gloria Scott will be the tutor for the whole course. Those who have already paid for the 6 weeks will of course receive a refund. Meril is away from 28th September to 11th November so Pat has agreed to take workshop bookings/enquiries for that period.
I do encourage you to book in for the Colour Calligraphy course, the correct use of colour is something we all need to be proficient at as it can really enhance a piece of work as well as being fun.
Workshop Bookings: Please email your booking and payment information (including the code) to Meril Bowyer at meril@bowyer.com.au or post to PO Box 714 Caringbah 1495. Direct debit details are available if you prefer to pay electronically.

Magazine
The next magazine will be in December. Please look out for any articles, good web sites etc that might be worth putting in. It is your magazine and can’t happen without people contributing. Email suggestions/articles to Penny plaver100@gmail.com
Membership: the membership remains at 24 financial members and 5 life members.
Blog: There were 607 page views this month, most being for the visit to the Mary Rose and then the September meeting summary followed by workshops. With The USA having the most viewers after Australia.

Social Activities: The Victoria Barracks Tour will take place next year in late February or early March. There is also a possibility of a behind the scenes tour of the Capitol Theatre later in the year. Further details to follow.

25th Anniversary 2016: The survey to members and past members will go out in the next couple of weeks inviting them to take part in the celebrations and to write down any historical anecdotes/facts/recollections that could be complied into the proposed history of Calligraphy Southscibes.
Apart from the history it was agreed that we would do a piece of collaborative work in the form of a wall hanging with a completion date of late October next year.

Each member who participates will do a designated letter (pulled out of a hat) Each letter will be on a 12 x 12 cm piece of paper. (the paper will be provided by Southscibes so there is uniformity)
 The minimum letter size must be 8cm x 8cm.
 The letter itself can be any colour any design you wish, it does not necessarily have to be centered.
 The letters will form the words CALLIGRAPHY SOUTHSCRIBES
 When all letters are completed they will be mounted on a black background.
 As we have more or less the number of members as the letters we need it would be fitting if every member were to volunteer to do a letter and then the project would be truly representative of Calligraphy Southscribes. The project will be coordinated by Penny so could you please let her know of your intention to participate by email plaver100@gmail.com. as soon as possible.

Exhibition at Dragon’s Lair: This is confirmed and will be for the month of April 2016 .Cathy, Kay and Glenis to have a meeting with Dragon’s Lair on Monday so more details will be available after that. It is confirmed that work needs to be mounted only, not framed. The theme will still be World War 1 and the exhibition title will be the same as for the Hazelhurst Exhibition. Please think of entering a work, even if you are not too experienced, it only needs to be small and you get a real buzz seeing your work hanging in an exhibition!

Christmas Party: This will be on 12th December from 12pm to 2pm at Sylvania as usual. Entry fee is a Christmas card. Do put this in your diary it is a fun day and a good opportunity to relax and just have a chat.

Winding up of Calligraphy Southscribes: If there is a slight possibility that this could happen in the future we should have something in place well beforehand to avoid any difficulties. There is nothing specific in the constitution regarding this.
There will be a special general meeting following the AGM for an amendment to be made to the constitution to allow for this.

Calliart: the next Calliart is 14th November “Swing cards” with Glenis. Glenis showed us some at the meeting and they would be ideal for Christmas cards so do come along.
WORD OF THE MONTH FOR OCTOBER IS ZEST – a different challenge this month as it is a very short word! We had some great ones for friendship, keep them coming.

If you have any contact details for any past members that you think may be interested please let Valerie know. secretary@calligraphysouthscribes.com
Joint weekend away with an allied group. Following a very productive and enjoyable weekend away at Youthworks Pat suggested that we could consider combining with this group to have a similar weekend(s) next year, as we are too small a group to do this on own. This could again be at Youthworks (in the National Park) or The Tops at Stanwell Tops.
It was agreed that this was a good idea and we will keep it in mind for next year.
Joint Exhibition with Continuum
 The venue for this is Club on East from Thursday 14th April to Sunday 17th April with no cost for hire.
 We will need to run our own roster to be present from 10am to 4pm on each day except the Saturday which is a committee meeting day and the organisers have been advised of this
 Works can be NFS, whether they must be framed is yet to be advised.
 We must organise hanging and contribute to the cost of the screens.
 There will be no commission taken by the club, just 10% by Southscribes.
 Can enter any works, there is no theme.
 The person on duty needs to count the number of visitors.
 We are able to use our own tablecloth.
 Continuum will advertise in the National Trust magazine as we are under their umbrella

CSS We had an informal discussion as about what we would do should the Society wind up at some future date. This will be formally be discussed at the October Committee meeting with a possibility of a special meeting following the AGM 2016
Calliart: the next Calliart is 10th October “Pens and their Uses” with Valerie – a very good one to attend.
WORD OF THE MONTH FOR OCTOBER IS FRIENDSHIP – a bit of a challenge as it is a long word, start thinking, we had some great ones for rhythm.

August 2015 Meeting Summary

CALLIGRAPHY SOUTHSCIBES SUMMARY for August 2015
Workshops: The next workshop is on Saturday 15th August, Running Bookhand with Gloria Scott. There has been a less than ideal response to this workshop and I do urge you to consider booking in. Runnning book hand is a very good script to have in your repertoire, it is a lovely script, quite versatile and not too difficult.
The next Lettering Course commences on 2nd September, Rustica with Valerie Keevers. This is historically a very interesting and important script, so again, do consider booking in for this as it is not often taught.
Workshop Bookings: Please email your booking and payment information (including the code) to Meril Bowyer at
meril@bowyer.com.au or post to PO Box 714 Caringbah 1495. Direct debit details are available if you prefer to pay electronically.
Workshops 2016: We have more or less finalised the Full Day Workshops, Lettering Courses and Calliart for next year and have some exciting things in the calendar which I hope will inspire you to come along to some of them. We would love to see some fresh faces.
The Lettering Courses this year will cover the Gothic period and beyond.
Term 1: Textura (Glora Scott)
Term 2: Fraktur (Patricia)
Term 3: Rotunda (Glenis)
Term 4 Modern Batarde (Valerie)

October: Valerie. Working with vellum
If Colleen Little becomes available we will add an extra workshop with her towards the end of the year.
Calliart:
25th Anniversary : Next year we will be celebrating our 25th Anniversary which is quite an achievement for a small organisation. We would welcome your suggestions as to how to mark this occasion both artistically and socially. Please put your thinking caps on and if you have any brilliant ideas send them off to our President. Patricia patriciamoody1@bigpond.com
Magazine: An e-magazine will be coming out in September, if you have anything to contribute or have seen an interesting article on the web please email it to Patricia patriciamoody1@bigpond.com
Word of the Month: it is pleasing to see some of newer members taking part in this. It is a challenge to do something interesting with just one word but we are receiving some very interesting and imaginative pieces of work. You can of course write that one word as many times as you like. Keep up the good work and those of you who have not yet participated do consider it, you can join in any time. Just remember the criteria. The word for September is rhythm. Have fun!
Social Activities: Seven of us went to the Maritime Museum on Monday to view the Mary Rose Scroll which was most interesting and hopefully it will remain on display. An enormous amount of work went into it and a great feather in the cap of those Southscibes who completed it. Thanks to Mirielle for arranging our visit. Afterwards we had a very nice lunch in Darling Harbour.
Out next social activity is the tour of the QVB is confirmed for Monday September 14th. The time to be advised but will be around 10.30/11 am followed by brunch/lunch. Mirielle will check and confirm time.
A tour of Victoria Barracks is proposed for early next year – probably March.
Calliart: The next Calliart is on the 12th September - a simply sewn pamphlet book with a folded cover which is a handy size

CALLIGRAPHY SOUTHSCIBES SUMMARY for JUNE 2015

Dear Members and Followers,

Here is the summary from our June Meeting:

Workshops:  The next workshop is Modern Carolingian with Patricia Moody.  Please consider attending this workshop, the script is a beautiful one and very useful as Patricia will be putting a modern interpretation on it. The workshop is well booked but we would love to see some new faces in attendance as well as the ever faithful attendees without whom we could not continue.

Workshops 2016: It was agreed that it is good to have a vising tutor particularly to stretch the more experienced members but at the same time someone who would be empathetic to less experienced participants. It was decided that Colleen Little would be ideal and Pat will make an initial approach to her to see if she would be available and what she could offer.
If you have any ideas about what you would like to have as workshops next year please contact the Workshop Coordinator or the President with your thoughts.
It was decided, after some discussion that it is better to have the lettering courses over two terms as 6 weeks is too short. So for next year we will trial that format ie, there will be two topics held over 2 terms being 12 weeks in total.

There was some concern that it was a big commitment for one tutor to be available for that whole time and perhaps a different tutor could do the second term. However it was generally felt, particularly among those who are students in the courses that a single tutor is preferable. So it was agreed that should the need arise, due to travel or illness that a substitute tutor would step in as needed on an informal basis.
It was also agreed that we could introduce an early bird payment discount if students paid for both terms at the beginning. The fee structure would be $160 for members (instead of $200) and $200 for non – members (instead of $240)
For weekend workshops and Calliart the format will remain the same.

Workshop Bookings: Please email your booking and payment information (including the code) to Meril Bowyer at
meril@bowyer.com.au or post to PO Box 714 Caringbah 1495. Direct debit details are available if you prefer to pay electronically.

Magazine: There was a typo in the last summary for which I apologise, the newsletter will be coming out quarterly not bi-monthly. The editors would love to have any contributions you may like to make. If you come across an interesting web site or article email the address off to Cathy. The newsletter will start in September.

Membership: There have been 3 renewals since last meeting.  Currently there are 23 members with 5 life members. It is a disappointing drop in membership but encouraging to see we have 3 new members, 2 of whom are from Pat’s Jannali evening class.

Social Activities: Mirielle will contact the Maritime Museum for information regarding tours and times for the Mary Rose and report back at the next meeting. There was a brief discussion re a tour of the Mitchell Library and the QVB but this is on hold until we have the details of the Mary Rose.
It was also suggested that it might be nice to have high tea somewhere, possibly at Carlton House. Mirielle will investigate.

Monthly Project
To try to encourage more participation from members without making it too taxing on time or effort we have decided to introduce a monthly project.  We ask that you write one word – the word of the month will be given to you. We will start in July with the word winter.
The only criteria is A5 size landscape with a 4 cm margin on the left-hand side. This is with a view of perhaps making your individual pieces into a small book at a later date. Apart from that you can do what you like – any paper, any colour, background or no background, let you imagination run wild!
At the next Calliart session after the end of each month you can bring your letter to show it off and/or send Cathy a photograph for the blog.  Please consider participating, it won’t take much of your time and we really want to encourage members who we don’t see very often to feel more part of Calligraphy Southscribes. .

Calliart:  We had a great afternoon with Art Deco lettering, very ably guided by Glenis. It was a very popular topic with over a dozen participants, so the room was buzzing. If you have not attended one of these afternoons I really encourage you to do so as they are informal, great fun and gives you a chance to have a chat with people and get to know everyone. Particularly if you are a new member. The next Calliart on July 11th is Japanese card making, one of which will be particularly good for children. The details will be on the blog.

Next Committee meeting:  11th July

May Summary

CALLIGRAPHY SOUTHSCRIBES SUMMARY for MAY 2015

Workshops:  The continuation of the Italic Lettering Course is proceeding well with 8   participants. There have been no other bookings for future workshops at this time, Meril will send out an email reminder and Gloria will encourage her evening class to participate in Calliart and workshops.
The next workshop, Modern Carolingian with Pat Moody, will be at the SUSS Club at Sutherland on the 20th June 10am to 4pm.
Please consider booking in for some workshops and attending the Calliart afternoons, it is your society and we need
your support to keep it viable.

Workshop Bookings: Please email your booking and payment information (including the code) to Meril Bowyer at
meril@bowyer.com.au or post to PO Box 714 Caringbah 1495. Direct debit details are available if you prefer to pay electronically.

Magazine It was decided that we would try to maintain a basic newsletter to go out bi- monthly, with eg the presidents report, workshop information and reports and some photos. Those without email will receive a hard copy as before. It is anticipated that the first newsletter will be out in the first week of June. This will only be sent to those who have renewed their membership

Membership: Our current membership stands at 20 financial members and 5 life members. It is pleasing to report that we have 3 new members, 2 from Pat’s Community College class and one from Gloria’s Italic Lettering Course. However it is disappointing that so far only 17 members have renewed their membership. Glenis has sent reminders and membership renewal forms to those members who have not as yet renewed their membership in the hope that they will do so.  For those who do not renew their membership this will be the last summary you will receive.

Social Activities: We have received an email from the Maritime Museum regarding the Mary Rose Exhibition. The social secretary may consider organising a visit. More details when they become available.

Hazelhurst Exhibition. This was a resounding success with many compliments, such as “one of the best exhibitions I have ever seen” from one visitor and similar. The subject seemed to strike a chord with many people. Fifteen calligraphers produced 36 pieces of work which was a wonderful effort and 10 were sold. The President of the ASC mentioned what a great exhibition it was at their committee meeting. A very big thank you to all those who worked so hard to submit pieces and to “mind the shop” at the exhibition in spite of the appalling weather on a couple of days.
We are putting in a submission to move the exhibition to the Dragon’s Lair next year. There is a possibility that we may be able to hang some extra pieces so keep thinking of anything else you may wish to do.

Calliart: A fun afternoon was had by all making paste paper with Kath McEwen. It was very pleasing to see a new member and two guests who participated and another new member who came in to meet us. A big thank you to Kath who spent a great deal of time in meticulous preparation of all the materials.

Next Committee meeting:  Saturday 13th June.
