We're Getting Straight to the Point - Calliarts - Modern Uncial Or Pointed Pen Uncial

 Dear Members and Followers

Come join me in this afternoon Calliarts for some fun with letters. The letterform is based on Mike Kecseg’s Pointed Pen Uncial, where the compressed letters are oval instead of round with no ascenders and the descenders are minimal.

Mike Kecseg writes in Uncommon Numbers, that “the idea behind the development of this hand was to use the pointed pen to create letterforms that are traditionally done with a broad-edged nib.” c.1998 PenUltimates, Plantation, Florida.

By the end of the afternoon, you will have learnt a new hand or, brushed up on a familiar one and go home with a reminder of the class that you will create.

Calliarts - A Modern Uncial

Dear Members and Followers,

Calliarts - Modern Uncial  with tutor Cathy Sayer

Modern Uncial is a great script for a novice or the seasoned Calligrapher.

The effect one can achieve is never disappointing, whether it is a word is written on a piece of scrap Saundersor Waterford paper, or a longer text. The beauty of this script is being able to use a monoline pen - it is an efficient, yet stylised scriptwhich always ‘looks good’ !

In this workshop, our tutor provided some of her inspiring samples and there wasample time to share our work and look at all the variation we could use
for the script - from varying the ‘x’ height size , the ‘down’ stroke ,to using
a myriad of colours and an occasional, unstated flourish or two.

Thank you RG.

Calliarts - Modern Uncial

Dear Members and Followers,

After the special meeting and AGM on Saturday 12 March 2016, Calligraphy Southscribes, Inc. will be holding its monthly Calliarts afternoon. This month it is Modern Uncial.

Modern Uncial is adapted from Mike Kecseg's Pointed Pen Uncial. This version is excellent for beginners and more experienced calligraphers or lettering artists as it is suitable for both pen and monoline marker. An ideal hand for more modern uses. All levels of experience welcome and a great introduction to pointed pen calligraphy. We will round the day off by making bookmarks using the script.

 Materials List:
  • Normal Calligraphy gear but must include a pointed pen nib (we are not using chisel nibs)
  • Gouache (in addition to your ink for practise if your want to use it)
  • Coloured pencils
  • Monoline pens or markers in different colours
  • Materials to make bookmarks (light card for backing (scrapbooking card), coloured or neutral canson, or other to write on; hole punch, cords, glue, cutting mat and knife (unless you already come prepared), embellishments, scissors, etc. If you wish to make a stencil bookmark bring some patterned light paper with you. Glossy paper for gluing. Tracing paper.
