A Brush with the East - Lexie Arlington

Dear Members and Followers,

We are privileged to have the renowned Lexi Arlington conducting a workshop for Calligraphy Southscribes.

Looking for non- traditional/non- western ways to create backgrounds for your calligraphic endeavours? Come and learn how.
This workshop will show you how to create backgrounds with an oriental theme. During this one day workshop students will be taught various techniques using East Asian (Chinese/Japanese) calligraphic materials such as brushes, Sumi (liquid and stick) and oriental paper.
The method for mounting the thin oriental paper will be demonstrated so that it can be used for applying lettering with a broad edge nib or brush to create expressive calligraphic art.

Liquid Sumi
Ink stick and stone

·        Medium /large size oriental brush

·        3-4 small ceramic or plastic containers (soya sauce dishes or similar)-for ground Sumi

·        Spray bottle

If you have a piece of felt -3mm thick (about A3) please bring.  These are available at Spotlight for $3.99.  Otherwise please bring newspaper that can be used for absorbing the water and Sumi beneath your work

·        Newspaper for drying work

Calliarts - Eastern Style Alphabet

Dear Members and Followers,

Join us as we venture east with our July Calliarts and tutor Glenis Sheather.
 

This Eastern-Style alphabet is inspired by the one featured in “The Art of Calligraphy” series.  Based on the Italic Script, this flowing alphabet has been given a modern, Eastern appearance by extending the width of the letters and elongating the flourishes.  In this Calliarts workshop both minuscules and majuscules will be covered, with the aim of producing a small piece of work.

Nib size – William Mitchell 2, Speedball 3 or Brause 2 or similar

Layout pad

Ink or gouache of your choice

An A4 sheet of tracing paper

Tiny Writing in March

Dear Members and Followers,

One of our newer members Cherrie took us through elements of a workshop she had attended at SSIW. Cherrie was well prepared with lots of notes and examples for us; and began the class explaining the knowledge she had gained, how to apply it (the uses of tiny writing) and the tools you could use to create tiny writing.

With all good lettering, spacing and consistency are critical and tiny writing is no exception. We first attempted some lettering by “just having a go” only to discover that both our spacing and consistency just did not cut it. Cherrie was prepared for our inexperience and produced graph paper with loads of examples and even more graph paper to enable us to work our way through the examples producing much better results. It was surprising how long it took to work our way through all of Cherrie’s examples with all our writing tools, ensuring care and accuracy at all times. I found writing on the graph paper centred my thoughts and gave me much better results when I began to write on good paper.

As the saying goes “From little things, big things grow” and this certainly was true with the March Calliarts, while writing tiny we produced big results.
