We're Getting Straight to the Point - Calliarts - Modern Uncial Or Pointed Pen Uncial

 Dear Members and Followers

Come join me in this afternoon Calliarts for some fun with letters. The letterform is based on Mike Kecseg’s Pointed Pen Uncial, where the compressed letters are oval instead of round with no ascenders and the descenders are minimal.

Mike Kecseg writes in Uncommon Numbers, that “the idea behind the development of this hand was to use the pointed pen to create letterforms that are traditionally done with a broad-edged nib.” c.1998 PenUltimates, Plantation, Florida.

By the end of the afternoon, you will have learnt a new hand or, brushed up on a familiar one and go home with a reminder of the class that you will create.

Words Paint a Picture - May Calliarts - Calligrams

 Dear Members and Followers,

A calligram is a picture or design that is created by arranging words or lines to fill or form an image.  Usually, the words relate to the image.  The most basic example is a single outline filled with written texture to create the image, or to form the outline of the image.

There are no hard and fast rules, e.g. letter height, line spacing, pen, nib size, to create a calligram.  However, calligrams require good planning and practice with trials of roughs and the selected image before attempting the final image.

With an easily identified shape a loose style of lettering can be used, e.g. a leaf shape can be simply formed by repeating the word “leaf” over and over again in a freely written script.

Extract from The Encyclopedia of Calligraphic Techniques.

“If text (words) are to be read, more time is needed to fit words into the shape.  Some possible ideas (solutions) could be to include different styles of letterforms and/or different weights.  Don’t forget variations of texture, nib or lettering size and colour variation can be adopted to give added form or definition to the shape.”

March Calliarts - Modern Pen with Glenis

 Dear Members and Followers,

In what could be our last ever Calliarts - come join us for something thoroughly modern.

Modern variations of Copperplate are becoming more and more popular, with different versions appearing in advertising, cards, etc.  The lettering I will be presenting to you is quite funky and can be used for many projects, such as name tags, greeting cards, etc.  It teams nicely with the Doodling pieces Cathy presented at our Christmas Party Calliarts, so if you would like to add some words to the pieces you did at that workshop please bring them along.

Materials List:

Pointed nibs - either straight or elbow depending on your preference

Layout pad

Ink or gouache of your choice

Usual Calligraphy gear

Optional – pieces from the Doodling Workshop

Calliarts - Italic Afternoon - Bernadino Cataneo in 1545

 Dear Members and Followers,

We start back in 2022 with Italic for our first Calliarts afternoon.

Come with me as we explore the Italic basics with the beautiful formal Italic written by Bernadino Cataneo in 1545.  This beautiful little “cancellaresca corsiva” script is quite amazing with its multitude of different ampersands and can be adapted to suit your own style and become very contemporary.  Italic is such a useful script that everyone needs to return to the basics every now and again.
