Finally from New Zealand, there is a workshop report on 'Contemporary Copperplate'; about a website called 'Calligraphy Masters' at www.calligraphymasters also on Facebook. There are some Christmas Crafts to make, a profile of Rose Browning and another report on a Calligraphy Retreat and Artwork.

‘Fill the Space’ Calliart Workshop - Tutor Gloria Scott

Dear Members and Followers,

Despite the extreme heat, the February Calliart workshop was very well attended. It was an afternoon with lots of ideas and inspiration.

In any piece of work there is usually ‘a space to fill’ whether it is a corner, an end of sentence or paragraph or line break. Gloria had loads of samples of how these spaces might be filled. These included borders, leaves, scrolls, dots and flourishes.

We began working in pencil, practising the different shapes and swirls and then applying an idea to a text from a range of sample texts and layouts Gloria provided. Along the way we were gently reminded of good calligraphic practice – “always work it out in pencil first.........don’t rush your work.......be careful not to cramp the flourishes.........they should appear to be free......don’t overdo it!’

Later in the afternoon we were treated to a demonstration of Gloria’s signature ‘space fillers’ – a floral motif. We were spellbound as she modelled and fashioned a range of leaves and cascading flowers with a flick and sweep of her favourite sable brush!

Thank you Gloria for such a satisfying workshop and for guiding us in what was a truly relaxing afternoon.

Vale Dorothy Nellie Coker 1931 – 2017

Suddenly in hospital 1st February 3rd 2017.
Dorothy commenced calligraphy classes at Jannali Community College in 2003 and soon after joined CSS.  Dorothy was a committee member (Library) until her passing.  Dorothy began her professional life as a nurse at St George hospital.  Dorothy and her husband Ted spent the early years of their marriage in PNG, where their three children were born. The family returned to Jannali in November 1957 and sometime later Dorothy was widowed.

Dorothy resumed her nursing career, undertaking permanent night duty and studied to achieve several nursing certificates.  She was later appointed Assistant Director of Nursing at St George Hospital, and continued her lifelong support of the Nursing Association.  Dorothy was also a valued member and several years ago was installed as Grand Matron of the Eastern Star Association.

Dorothy outlived her son Donald (Dec 2010 ) and second husband Ted (Dec 2011 ). She is survived by her daughter Gwen, son Raymond and their families.

She was a very loyal member of CSS, participating in as many workshops and exhibitions as possible. Her bright eyed smile will be greatly missed. RIP Dorothy.
