November Calliarts - White Vine with Valerie Keevers

 Dear Members and Followers,

Finally we can meet again. After numerous months of calligraphy at home, we can finally get together.

This month's Calliarts is White Vine with Valerie Keevers

Renaissance scribes drew their influence from the manuscripts of the 10th & 11th centuries, reinventing the vine stem and leaf motifs into even more organic manifestations, to writhe and twine their way back through raised gold letters and borders.
The vine, which is shaded to suggest 3D form, is the most dominant motif. P208.

The description is taken from "Illuminated Letters/Margaret Morgan" A&C Black c2006.

Pad, pencil, ruler, eraser.

1 or 2 —A5 approx. W/colour paper or any size bits you have.

Weaving Some Calligraphy Magic - Calliarts for June

 Dear Members and Followers,

While it may be cold outside, we haven't stopped bringing you another exciting Calliarts afternoon, this time with Glenis Sheather, who will be taking us through the fun of Weaver Script.

When we consider the use of pointed pens we immediately think of Copperplate and its variations.  However, a pointed pen can be used for many more scripts and one of these is Weaver Script.  This fun script was designed by American calligrapher, the late Gwen Weaver.  The script has only 26 letters (no capitals) so can be easily leant in a three-hour workshop.  The aim of this Calliarts is to have a fun and relaxing afternoon playing with some interesting letters.

Materials List:

Pointed nibs - either straight nibs in an oblique holder or an elbow nib in a straight holder

Forget Cooler Days - Italic is All the Go this May

 Dear Members and Followers,

This May we are diving into Italic with Patricia Moody for both a Calliarts and a Workshop. Patricia is renowned for her Italic calligraphy works so take advantage of these days.

Calliart; Getting to grips with Italic - Saturday 8 May 2021

This will not be a structured afternoon dealing with all of the many problems individual scripts can present. Rather it will be a few hours of revision, with maybe a variation or two for those who might want to hone some rusty pen skills. Or, a basic beginners guide to letterform, pen angles, X heights etc for members new to the Italic hand.

There will be no pressure to achieve a finished piece during our 3 hours together, instead it will be a few hours spent among friends while playing with pen and ink.

Materials List: Bring whatever you have, or feel comfortable using. Larger pens, ie Speedball no 2 or even double pencils for the less experienced. A3 layout pad, eraser, ruler, pencil, and either ink or paint of your choice. (If the latter, don’t forget a mixing palette & brushes, water jar and rags/ paper towel)

When: 8 May 2021

Time: 1pm to 4pm

Where: Sylvania Community Hall, Canberra Road, Sylvania NSW

Cost: $15.00 - payment before the afternoon via direct deposit

Bookings: Essential - email southscribes@yahoo.com.au to book and banking details.

March into Calligraphy - Rotunda Calliarts

 Dear Members and Followers,

This March Calliarts sees our tutor Gloria Scott present Rotunda.

This Rotunda script developed from the Carolinginian miniscule, had established its own
distinctive form by the 12th century and remained popular until the 18th century.  It was
widely used in Spain.  Its use varied from small text hand to large letters as used in
Choral Antiphonals.   (This information abstracted from the Calligraphy Bible by David Harris.)

Rotunda has many uses, e.g. cards, bookmarks, lettering titles, envelopes, etc.
It will assist the activity if the participants could prepare their line guides.
 March 13 lower case line guide:  Ascender 2 p/w, body height 4 p/w, descender 2 p/w
with an interlinear break of two or three pen widths, using the pen nib size of your choice.

The April Calliart will be centred on the capitals and some decoration.

Materials:  You will need your usual calligraphy gear; i.e. layout pad, slope board if you have one,
plastic ruler, HB or 2B pencil, fine liner pen, pen nibs Speedball 2 or 3, Mitchell 1 1/2 or 2 or similar,
ink or gouache, water jar to clean nibs, paper towel.

Please note this is a two part class - March 13 and April 10. Do one or both (recommended both)

When: Saturday 13 March 2021

Where: Sylvania Community Hall, Canberra Road, Sylvania

Time: 1pm to 4pm

Cost: $10.00

Bookings: Due to COVID-19 requirements, bookings are now required for all calliarts and workshops. To book: email southscribes@yahoo.com.au  for registration and direct deposit details.

Our first workshop for the year is Running Bookhand.  This modern variation of a 10th Century hand is easily read and written, which makes it an ideal script for beginners.  Experienced calligraphers can use the workshop as a refresher, as well as extending their knowledge of this script by using different pens and writing on curves.  In this workshop both minuscules and majuscules will be covered, with the aim of producing a small project.
