Going Around in Circles

Dear Members and Followers,

I set the next challenge to send our members around and around in circles.

I guessed that we all had that spare toilet roll or similar sitting in the recycling so why not use it and being inspired by other great calligraphers I set our group the challenge of creating a piece of calligraphy using the roll, some paint and some suitably worded quotes.

The results were inspiring so please enjoy.

Dear Members and Followers,

We restrictions have eased we are not yet back into our workshops or into our Calliarts but that hasn't stopped our members from being creative.

Hello From Us

Dear Members and Followers,

While we aren't meeting for workshops and calliarts we are still working away with challenges.

In these distancing times I sent out the dare to our members to pick up a pencil and write Hello in three different languages. It could be in graphite or coloured and the responses, I just had to share.

So from Calligraphy Southscribes Inc in Sydney Australia a big "Hello"

Copperplate Part 1

Dear Members and Followers,

Our March Calliarts is Copperplate with Glenis Sheather. Glenis is renowned for her Copperplae works and describes the workshop as:

Copperplate has become the name given to English Roundhand, the elegant script developed by the Writing Masters in England following the popularity of the lettering being used by engravers in the 16th Century.   A fine cursive hand, Copperplate is written with a pointed nib, using the pressure on, pressure off technique.  In Part 1 we will cover the lower case letters.

MATERIALS LIST

  • Elbow nib* and pen holder OR a straight pointed nib and an oblique pen holder.
  •  Ink (Chinese or similar) or gouache of your choice.
  • 2B or HB pencil
·         Usual Calligraphy Gear.  However, you will not need a slope board.

*Elbow nibs can be purchased at Eckersley’s.  If you are unable to buy one I will have some for sale on the day for $3.50 each.  Please have the correct money.

Pointing Towards a Calliarts and Workshop for November

Dear Members,

For our last month of the year please join us for a calliarts and workshop based on Pointed Gothic.

10th – Calliarts – An introduction to Pointed Gothic – Gloria Scott
In preparation for workshop on following Saturday 17th November, we will prepare for the full day workshop, beginning with guide lines for various nib widths, basic strokes and “shadow letterforms”.

17th – Workshop – Pointed Gothic – Gloria Scott
This is an attractive and versatile letterform. It has some very distinctive basic strokes that are not dissimilar to Batarde, with the internal counter space based on the Mandela almond shape. We will follow on from the preparatory exercises covered in our Calliart afternoon of the previous week, 10th November. As Christmas is just around the corner we will
"Create for Christmas", using this letterform for cards, bookmarks, gift wrap and other ideas for more formal or extended uses. This letterform has many applications, suitable for varying pen widths lettering. All levels of calligraphy are welcome.
