July Calliarts - Copperplate Decoration

 Dear Members,

Don't let winter give you the blues, come along have a fun time with Copperplate Decoration at Calligraphy Southscribes with Valerie.

Copperplate decoration is about learning the shapes/ marks a flexible pen can make and will add to your calligraphic skills.

The shapes are used to fill in letters or any specific shape eg. animals and flowers to make a pleasing picture.  Easier to do than traditional flourishing and use of colour gives a modern feeling.  A very relaxing way to enjoy a scribes Calliart afternoon on 13 th July.


Materials List:
  • Any type of flexible or copperplate nibs.
  • Ink or paint, several colours.
  • Brush for mixing plus something to mix paints on.
  • 2 water jars.
  • Pencil, eraser, ruler.
  • A4 practice pad.
  • 2 or 3 small pieces of watercolour paper or coloured paper or light weight card about A5 size.
  • Bring only if you you have any stencils or templates of flowers or animals as outline will be filled with decoration.

Copperplate 2 - The Class Continues

Dear Members and Followers, Some say the sequel is never as good as the original but in this case it isn't true. Copperplate Part 2 CALLIARTS 11 March 2023 Tutor: Glenis Sheather Following on from Copperplate Part 1, in this second Calliarts workshop we will concentrate on the beautiful capital letters of this graceful script. It is advisable but not mandatory to have done Copperplate Part 1 before embarking on Part 2 MATERIALS LIST • Bleedproof Layout Pad, preferably A4 size. • Elbow nib* and pen holder OR a straight pointed nib and an oblique pen holder. • Ink (Chinese or similar) or gouache of your choice. • 2B or HB pencil • Usual Calligraphy Gear. However, you will not need a slope board. *Elbow nibs can be purchased at Eckersley’s. If you are unable to buy one I will have some for sale on the day for $3.50 each. Please have the correct money. We're Back - Calliarts in February is Copperplate

 Dear Members and Followers,

As we hinted on Insta, we're back in February and what a better way to start the year than with Copperplate tutored by Glenis.

Copperplate has become the name given to English Roundhand; the elegant script developed by the Writing Masters in England following the popularity of the lettering being used by engravers in the 16th Century.   A fine cursive hand, Copperplate is written with a pointed nib, using the pressure on, pressure off technique.  We will cover the lower-case letters at the February 11 Calliarts, followed by the capital letters at Calliarts on 11 March.

Beginners and the more experienced calligrapher welcomed.

MATERIALS LIST 

·         Bleedproof Layout Pad, preferably A4 size
·         Elbow nib* and a straight pen holder OR a straight pointed nib and an oblique pen holder
·         Ink (Chinese or similar) or gouache of your choice
·         2B or HB pencil
·         A sheet of tracing paper
·         Usual Calligraphy Gear #You will not need a slope board

Calliarts - And We are Back

With the gradual easing of restrictions we are back in operation though with a strict COVID-19 plan in place.
You will need to register for a place in the class to ensure you are able to participate (we don't want to have to turn you away), we are also encouraging payment of the class fee via direct deposit.

It seems such a long time since the Copperplate Part 1 Calliarts and I hope those of you who attended that workshop have been using the period of isolation to do some practice.  The opening of Sylvania Hall means we can now hold the second workshop, where we will concentrate on the beautiful capital letters of this graceful script.  While it would be advisable to have attended Copperplate Part 1 before embarking on Part 2, people who were unable to do that workshop can come along and receive some tuition on the lower case letters.

Copperplate is an elegant script developed by the Writing Masters in England following the popularity of the lettering being used by lettering engravers in the 16th Century. Copperplate is a fine cursive hand written with a pointed nib using the pressure on, pressure off technique. This workshop is geared to beginner and intermediate levels.
Materials Required.
Bleedproof or bond layout pad (preferably A4 size), an elbow nib and holder (for beginners)* or an elbow holder and pointed nib of your choice, black non-waterproof Chinese ink, small water jar, HB pencil, ruler, eraser, folder with plastic display sleeves for handouts.
*Glenis will have a small supply of elbow nibs and holders for sale on the first night.
