July Calliarts - Embossing with Valerie

 Dear Members and Followers,

This month we take a break from our lettering and take out some embossing tools instead.

The Cambridge Dictionary describes embossing as:

"To decorate an objectespecially with letters, using special tools that make a raised mark on its surface"

This will be a fun way to spend a Winter's afternoon following our Christmas in July lunch.

General Requirements:

  • Masking tape,
  • A4 pad,
  • Tracing paper,
  • Bone folder,

Report Embossing Workshop – Sat 18 July 2015 – Tutor Pat Moody

This workshop was held at Club East Sutherland and we had a full complement of thirteen participants for a very creative day of experimenting with the art of embossing.
Pat showed us the basics of how to create our own designs and transfer them to card or plastic and cut stencils from them, these were then used to give an effective embossed image on card or paper. Certainly a challenge with some very interesting results. Also how to get different results with simple pre-cut stencils using a variety of tools. A most enjoyable day with plenty of ideas to continue playing at home.

Embossing Workshop

Dear Members and Followers,

Our next full day workshop is Embossing with Pat Moody.

EMBOSSING  WORKSHOP, SATURDAY 18TH JULY 2015        Limit 12 people.

CLUB ON EAST,  EAST PARADE, SUTHERLAND

Embossing is an easy technique, where either a simple a design, or some lettering is done as a raised image on paper.(Debossing is the reverse and gives a sunken image) The resulting subtle use of light and shade can then be used to great effect to enhance your
work. You can be as creative as you like, or use pre-cut, purchased stencils from a craft shop if you prefer.

YOU WILL NEED:

·    A cutting mat, preferably A3
·    A sharp craft knife for cutting, with a supply of new blades.

·    Embossing tools:  A spoon tipped burnisher, (these are quite hard to find in Sydney now, although Eckersleys at Taren Point have some at $23.95 !! The same can be got from John Neal in America for $US 5.25, which equals approx. $AU7.20. Item number S661. A 3mm ball burnisher, $12.95 Eckersleys, or $US2.99 John Neal. Item number S478. info@johnnealbooks.com air mail delivery is approx. 2 to 3 weeks.

·    Alternatively, try using what you have, provided it has a smooth surface (need to
avoid tearing the paper) ie, a small teaspoon,( a mustard spoon would be ideal,) smooth cap from the end of a pen, large crochet hook, or large knitting needle, wood or metal, then switching to a smaller implement to define the lines.

·    Card or plastic to cut your template. The back of a layout pad works very well, as does matt board or breakfast cereal boxes. Plastic could be an ice cream container lid, a sheet of acetate, but not too thin, or some polypropylene, or plastic etching plate about 1mm thick (both available from Eckersleys in various sizes) and costing up to $5 a sheet (A3)

·    Good quality tracing paper
·    Removable tape.
·    Pencils: 2B and an H.
·    Scissors.
·    Paper: mi-Teintes works well, as does Lana, but any soft, smooth paper will do. You do not need large pieces; try experimenting with different types depending on what you have available. NOT LAYOUT PAPER. Try not to use coloured paper as the shadow will be lost. White is best followed by neutrals.

·    Largish piece of board to rest your work on when embossing the design.
