Calligraphy Southscribes - Getting Creative.

Dear Members and Followers,

We restrictions have eased we are not yet back into our workshops or into our Calliarts but that hasn't stopped our members from being creative.

Just to prove it we have some more Hello's and the first of our circle challenge issued by yours truly. While I cannot organise workshops, I can challenge people to be creative.

Enjoy!

Calliarts - Colour and the Colour Wheel

Dear Members and Followers,

What a serendipitous moment that we bring you a Calliarts based on Colour as the season changes into Autumn and nature works with a limited palate.

This afternoon is tutored by Gloria who reveals:

When deciding to use colour in calligraphy and artwork we need to understand colour and how it works. In this three-hour workshop we will create a colour wheel from primary to secondary, tertiary and associated tints, shades and tones. A few simple exercises will lead from brush to pen and writing colour on colour. With just three primary colours at our fingertips we become magicians!

We look forward to seeing you on the 10 March 2018.

Costs and materials list on the Workshops page.

Calliarts is held at Sylvania Community Hall - Canberra Road, Sylvania

Colouring the Ending of 2015

Dear Members and Followers,

The last course for 2015 was on Colour, a necessary component of every calligraphers toolkit. It was therefore surprising that we only had eight participants for this final course though it was better than the original four, that we thought we were going to have.

Originally the course was supposed to be six weeks long, with three tutors completing two weeks of instruction each. Due to unforeseen circumstances, Gloria kindly stepped up to run a modified four weeks when circumstances prevented the other two tutors from teaching.

We commenced with learning about warm and cool colours and created a colour chart within both spectrums. We learnt what happened when we added white to a colour and then the difference when adding black and discovered the results of adding just water, and then more water to a colour.

The class gained from Gloria's vast knowledge of colour and the use of it acquired not only from calligraphy, but also from her botanical studies. We wound the four weeks up with experimenting with colour calligraphy on colour backgrounds and an exercise in colour graduation on black.

Thank you to Gloria for conducting the fours at short notice so that the class could go ahead and for sharing her wealth of knowledge.

Cathy

Workshop - Colour in Calligraphy

Dear Member and Followers,

The final lettering course for 2015, reduced to 4 weeks takes a twist and looks at colour. Our founding member Gloria Scott, will each be teaching four weeks of the course designed to increase your knowledge or introduce you to the concept of colour and calligraphy.

Calligraphers paint pictures with words, so the colour/s you choose for your script or background design can have a real effect on the feeling and emotion of your work.

The classic combination of black, red & white will always look good, but colour will make your work sing.

To commence, we will be creating a colour wheel and then it will be onto use of colour in our calligraphy.

Equipment List for Weeks 1:

  • Gouache, 14 ml tubes (Winsor & Newton) Series 1 only – ($8.70 Eckersley’s although 20% off until end of October) retail $7.45 each from Parkers Fine Arts, Cambridge St, The Rocks.
  •  Permanent white
  • Lamp black
  • Lemon yellow (cool)
  • Spectrum yellow (warm)
  • Sky blue (cool)
  • Ultramarine (warm)
  • Bengal rose (cool)
  • Flame red (warm)

Brushes - Eckersley’s have Cotman synthetic sable and Parker's their own brand

  •  4 x no 4 bristle brushes for mixing.
  • 2 good quality brushes for painting. Suggest No1 and No 3

But whatever you get, your brush must be able to retain a good point as you paint – don’t bother with sable brushes at this stage unless you already have them.

Extras:

  • 2 white ice cube trays, or small white porcelain dishes (Asian) for mixing.
  • Artline, indelible liner. Fine.
  • Small, narrow roil of Gladwrap (or similar)
  • 2 water jars, plus chux or old towel.

We will work with the colour wheel, tertiary colours, tones and tints, progressing to colour in letterforms, using either straight edged brushes or nibs, working on tone-on-tone.  Enrolments are asked to bring a verse or prose tocomplete the exercise.  Please bring usual calligraphy equipment, A3 layout pad etc.
