Calliarts - February 2024

 Dear Members and Followers,

To begin the year, we revisit Uncial, which is great hand to have in your skill set. The opportunities to use Uncial are endless, cards, wrapping paper, etc.

When we think Uncial, we think the Book of Kells https://www.tcd.ie/library/research-collections/book-of-kells.php

Uncial is a majuscule script (what we now know as capitals) commonly used from the 4th to 8th centuries AD. Over time the lettering has evolved into the modern variations we see today.  It’s a script that remains popular because of its ease of writing and legibility, making it an ideal script for our new members to learn.

October Calliarts - Upping Our Calligraphy Game with Uncial

 Dear Members and Followers,

The Uncial script was used by scribes between the 4th and 8th Centuries.  Over time the lettering has evolved into the modern variations we see today.  It’s a script that remains popular because of its ease of writing and legibility, making it an ideal script for our new members to learn.  We won’t forget our experienced calligraphers in the workshop because we will be looking at some variations to make the lettering more contemporary.

The project I have planned is the first phase of making a lid for one of the boxes planned for the November Calliarts.

Materials List:

·         An A3 size Bleedproof layout pad
·         A broad-edged nib, or duo pen for beginners; a variety of different sized nibs for                                 experienced calligraphers
·         Ink or gouache of your choice

·         Paper or card, white or cream, within the range of 190 – 210 gsm.  Newsagent cardboard is                 suitable.  2 x A4 sheets or 1 x A3 sheet
·         Ink, gouache or duo pen in Christmas colours
·         Cutting mat
·         Cutting blade
·         Steel ruler

Southscribes and Socially Distancing

Dear Members and Followers,

I have had some great responses from members providing items for these posts and the emails that I am sending out at this time. I'll send and post them out at different times, so you don't get overwhelmed with too many things to do all at once.

One just to hand is from Pam Forbes which is time sensitive, thank you Pam this course looks great.

Pam writes:

In reply for your request for interesting items - there is a free course from Trinity College Dublin, currently running online about the Book of Kells. It started 9 March, you can still join but you have limited time to finish.
It covers
  • Where and how the manuscript was made
  • The social context from which the manuscript emerged, including early medieval faith and politics.
  • The artistic context of the manuscript, reflecting local and international styles.
  • The theology and interpretations of the text.
  • How and why the manuscript survived
  • The Book of Kells and contemporary culture.

Keep safe and remember to check on your friends.

Cathy
