May Calliarts - Rotunda with Valerie and Gloria

 Dear Members and Followers,

This May we explore the blackletter script of Rotunda with Valerie and Gloria, who are both well versed in the script.

The Rotunda is a specific medieval blackletter script. It originates in Carolingian minuscule. Sometimes, it is not considered a blackletter script, but a script on its own. It was used mainly in southern Europe.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rotunda_(script)

One of the key differences between Rotunda and other blackletter scripts is that broken bows appear only in a few letters such as d.

Revisiting a Classic - Shamrock with Gloria

 Dear Members and Followers,

For the August Calliarts we are revisiting an old favourite in Shamrock.

Shamrock is an open style of lettering with a minimum of pen manipulation and no serifs or flourishes. Alan Cornwall in ‘The Australian students lettering book’ introduced it as “a style with roots in Gaelic language”. Kaye E. Frost in ‘Alphabets for calligraphers letters and design’ described it as “based on a type originally designed by Alan Withers”, so take your pick!

This letterform has very clear distinct letters and is usually written with a chisel edge nib.  It is also useful and very successful for brush lettering.

Materials List:

·         chisel nibs, Speedball 3 or Mitchell 2½

·         plus the usual calligraphy gear and a guide line page to suit your nib

Shamrock is written at a pen angle of 25 to 30 degrees, with a body height of 4 pen widths, ascenders 2 P/W and decenders 3 P/W.

March into Calligraphy - Rotunda Calliarts

 Dear Members and Followers,

This March Calliarts sees our tutor Gloria Scott present Rotunda.

This Rotunda script developed from the Carolinginian miniscule, had established its own
distinctive form by the 12th century and remained popular until the 18th century.  It was
widely used in Spain.  Its use varied from small text hand to large letters as used in
Choral Antiphonals.   (This information abstracted from the Calligraphy Bible by David Harris.)

Rotunda has many uses, e.g. cards, bookmarks, lettering titles, envelopes, etc.
It will assist the activity if the participants could prepare their line guides.
 March 13 lower case line guide:  Ascender 2 p/w, body height 4 p/w, descender 2 p/w
with an interlinear break of two or three pen widths, using the pen nib size of your choice.

The April Calliart will be centred on the capitals and some decoration.

Materials:  You will need your usual calligraphy gear; i.e. layout pad, slope board if you have one,
plastic ruler, HB or 2B pencil, fine liner pen, pen nibs Speedball 2 or 3, Mitchell 1 1/2 or 2 or similar,
ink or gouache, water jar to clean nibs, paper towel.

Please note this is a two part class - March 13 and April 10. Do one or both (recommended both)
