Weaving Some Calligraphy Magic - Calliarts for June

 Dear Members and Followers,

While it may be cold outside, we haven't stopped bringing you another exciting Calliarts afternoon, this time with Glenis Sheather, who will be taking us through the fun of Weaver Script.

When we consider the use of pointed pens we immediately think of Copperplate and its variations.  However, a pointed pen can be used for many more scripts and one of these is Weaver Script.  This fun script was designed by American calligrapher, the late Gwen Weaver.  The script has only 26 letters (no capitals) so can be easily leant in a three-hour workshop.  The aim of this Calliarts is to have a fun and relaxing afternoon playing with some interesting letters.

Materials List:

Pointed nibs - either straight nibs in an oblique holder or an elbow nib in a straight holder

Layout pad

Plastic ruler

HB or 2B pencil

Ink or gouache of your choice

Usual Calligraphy gear

When - Saturday June 12 2021 - 1pm to 4pm

Tutor - Glenis Sheather

Where - Sylvania Community Hall, Canberra Road, Sylvania

Cost - $15.00

Bookings - Essential - please email southscribes@yahoo.com.au to book and payment details.

Calliarts June 11 - Miniature Books with Valerie Keevers.

Dear Members and Followers,

The afternoon calliarts for this month is Miniature Books with Valerie Keevers.

This little circle hinged book is great for notes, little presents, collated photos of things that interest, quick sketching etc.  It has a great advantage in that it is easy to add and remove pages, works well in this square format and as a rectangular book for long pages that fold out.  Simple and quick to make it is handy to have in your armoury of small books.

Materials for Hinged Books.
  • Covers.  2 pieces of card 12cm X 12cm heavy enough to protect inner pages.
  • Card covering.  Any paper suitable eg. Marbled, Japanese, paste etc. 2 pieces 15 cm X 15 cm.
  • Pages.  Minimum of 8 pages 11cm X 11 cm.  Reflex or lined paper 80gsm, Canson  paper, Watercolour 110 gsm or any paper, any colour you have, depends on what use the book will have. Eg. Notebook, art book, photos.
  • End papers.  Can be same as cover paper, pages or contrasting colour.
  • Hinges 2 will be supplied at $1.00 cost.
  • Usual stuff.
Pencil, ruler, shiny paper for glueing, glue brush and PVA if you have.
Bone folder, Leather Punch (can use mine, don't buy one) steel ruler,
Sharp craft knife and small cutting mat unless you prepare book pages etc. at home.
Scissors and some grease proof paper.

If paper and card prepared at home you will have time to make several books of any size, so bring more papers, card etc.  I have four sizes for you to see, 22x16cm, 18x12cm, 11.5x10.5cm and 6.5x5.5cm.  The largest book requires 3 hinges as will any book larger than this.

Modern Carolingian Workshop Report

Dear Members and Followers,

Glenis provides us with a great report on the full workshop in June:

MODERN CAROLINGIAN WORKSHOP
Saturday, 20 June 2015
Tutor:  Patricia Moody

On a cool, winter day 14 students were very snug inside a small function room at Sutherland’s Club on East, where we spent the day exploring the Carolingian hand and some script variations.

Pat started the workshop by giving us a brief history of the script and showing us examples from books, as well as her own pieces and those of members Valerie Keevers and Penny Laver.

Then it was time for us to start practising a French style Carolingian, complete with the characteristic small body height, tall ascenders, heavy clubbed serifs and wider interlinear spacing.  This was followed by making our x-height slightly larger and using small entry serifs.  Writing with a 10o slope I found myself lapsing into Italic letters at this stage.  More concentration needed!  Our final variation was to write the letters sans serif, with the suggestion that we also compress or extend the letters.  These combinations gave a modern look to the script.

With time running out we wrote some prose on better quality paper.  Our show and tell display gave us all a chance to see what everyone else had been doing.  Carolingian written on paper with washed backgrounds looked particularly effective.

Armed with a large supply of handouts we have no excuse for not continuing to play with further variations at home, including trying English Carolingian on which the modern Foundational hand is based.

Thank you Pat for an enjoyable workshop and for introducing some, and reacquainting others, with this lovely, versatile script.
