CALLIGRAPHY SOUTHSCIBES SUMMARY for October 2015

Workshops
There are 7 bookings for the Jerusalem hand on 17th October so that will go ahead There are 4 bookings at present for the next lettering course, Colour Calligraphy commencing on the 21st October, it was decided that this would go ahead but owing to unforeseen circumstances it will be reduced to 4 weeks and Gloria Scott will be the tutor for the whole course. Those who have already paid for the 6 weeks will of course receive a refund. Meril is away from 28th September to 11th November so Pat has agreed to take workshop bookings/enquiries for that period.
I do encourage you to book in for the Colour Calligraphy course, the correct use of colour is something we all need to be proficient at as it can really enhance a piece of work as well as being fun.
Workshop Bookings: Please email your booking and payment information (including the code) to Meril Bowyer at meril@bowyer.com.au or post to PO Box 714 Caringbah 1495. Direct debit details are available if you prefer to pay electronically.

Magazine
The next magazine will be in December. Please look out for any articles, good web sites etc that might be worth putting in. It is your magazine and can’t happen without people contributing. Email suggestions/articles to Penny plaver100@gmail.com
Membership: the membership remains at 24 financial members and 5 life members.
Blog: There were 607 page views this month, most being for the visit to the Mary Rose and then the September meeting summary followed by workshops. With The USA having the most viewers after Australia.

Social Activities: The Victoria Barracks Tour will take place next year in late February or early March. There is also a possibility of a behind the scenes tour of the Capitol Theatre later in the year. Further details to follow.

25th Anniversary 2016: The survey to members and past members will go out in the next couple of weeks inviting them to take part in the celebrations and to write down any historical anecdotes/facts/recollections that could be complied into the proposed history of Calligraphy Southscibes.
Apart from the history it was agreed that we would do a piece of collaborative work in the form of a wall hanging with a completion date of late October next year.

Each member who participates will do a designated letter (pulled out of a hat) Each letter will be on a 12 x 12 cm piece of paper. (the paper will be provided by Southscibes so there is uniformity)
 The minimum letter size must be 8cm x 8cm.
 The letter itself can be any colour any design you wish, it does not necessarily have to be centered.
 The letters will form the words CALLIGRAPHY SOUTHSCRIBES
 When all letters are completed they will be mounted on a black background.
 As we have more or less the number of members as the letters we need it would be fitting if every member were to volunteer to do a letter and then the project would be truly representative of Calligraphy Southscribes. The project will be coordinated by Penny so could you please let her know of your intention to participate by email plaver100@gmail.com. as soon as possible.

Exhibition at Dragon’s Lair: This is confirmed and will be for the month of April 2016 .Cathy, Kay and Glenis to have a meeting with Dragon’s Lair on Monday so more details will be available after that. It is confirmed that work needs to be mounted only, not framed. The theme will still be World War 1 and the exhibition title will be the same as for the Hazelhurst Exhibition. Please think of entering a work, even if you are not too experienced, it only needs to be small and you get a real buzz seeing your work hanging in an exhibition!

Christmas Party: This will be on 12th December from 12pm to 2pm at Sylvania as usual. Entry fee is a Christmas card. Do put this in your diary it is a fun day and a good opportunity to relax and just have a chat.

Winding up of Calligraphy Southscribes: If there is a slight possibility that this could happen in the future we should have something in place well beforehand to avoid any difficulties. There is nothing specific in the constitution regarding this.
There will be a special general meeting following the AGM for an amendment to be made to the constitution to allow for this.

Calliart: the next Calliart is 14th November “Swing cards” with Glenis. Glenis showed us some at the meeting and they would be ideal for Christmas cards so do come along.
WORD OF THE MONTH FOR OCTOBER IS ZEST – a different challenge this month as it is a very short word! We had some great ones for friendship, keep them coming.

If you have any contact details for any past members that you think may be interested please let Valerie know. secretary@calligraphysouthscribes.com
Joint weekend away with an allied group. Following a very productive and enjoyable weekend away at Youthworks Pat suggested that we could consider combining with this group to have a similar weekend(s) next year, as we are too small a group to do this on own. This could again be at Youthworks (in the National Park) or The Tops at Stanwell Tops.
It was agreed that this was a good idea and we will keep it in mind for next year.
Joint Exhibition with Continuum
 The venue for this is Club on East from Thursday 14th April to Sunday 17th April with no cost for hire.
 We will need to run our own roster to be present from 10am to 4pm on each day except the Saturday which is a committee meeting day and the organisers have been advised of this
 Works can be NFS, whether they must be framed is yet to be advised.
 We must organise hanging and contribute to the cost of the screens.
 There will be no commission taken by the club, just 10% by Southscribes.
 Can enter any works, there is no theme.
 The person on duty needs to count the number of visitors.
 We are able to use our own tablecloth.
 Continuum will advertise in the National Trust magazine as we are under their umbrella

CSS We had an informal discussion as about what we would do should the Society wind up at some future date. This will be formally be discussed at the October Committee meeting with a possibility of a special meeting following the AGM 2016
Calliart: the next Calliart is 10th October “Pens and their Uses” with Valerie – a very good one to attend.
WORD OF THE MONTH FOR OCTOBER IS FRIENDSHIP – a bit of a challenge as it is a long word, start thinking, we had some great ones for rhythm.

Calliarts - September

Dear Members and Followers,

Yes, it's that time for me to be reminding you that the next meeting and a great Calliarts afternoon is soon approaching.

This month we are going to get creative and create a book or two. To tantalise you:

PAMPHLET BOOK WITH FOLDED COVER
Design Courtesy of Jean Riley

We will be making a small pamphlet sewn book with folded covers which require no gluing. This little book would be suitable as a notebook to keep in a handbag or pocket. The finished size is 12cm x 10cm. Although it is not glued the construction is quite sturdy.

The first photo is the completed book open and the second with the cover closed

MATERIALS

Paper for text block: an A1 size sheet of paper, about 120gsm, cartridge paper is ideal and cheap, but use any you like provided it is not too thick.

Covers. 2 sheets of A3 size very light card, about 160gsm, (Mei-teintes will work well) in two toning or contrasting colours. If you have it bring a third sheet in case we have time to do a second book

Decoration: If you wish you can add some Japanese paper or other decoration to the covers.

Other equipment

·         The largest cutting mat you have
·         Craft knife with a sharp blade.
·         Pencil
·         Ruler – 50 or 60cm if you have one or the longest you have, preferably a steel one for cutting.
·         Eraser
·         Thread – embroidery thread is fine or something similar.
·         Sewing needle – not to small – one that will easily fit your thread through the eye.
·         Small scissors
·         Bone folder
·         Awl or similar to put the sewing holes in your text block – a large needle will be OK.
·         Small size bulldog clip x 2

We may have time to do a second book and you will have sufficient paper from your A1 sheet for this.

August 2015 Meeting Summary

CALLIGRAPHY SOUTHSCIBES SUMMARY for August 2015
Workshops: The next workshop is on Saturday 15th August, Running Bookhand with Gloria Scott. There has been a less than ideal response to this workshop and I do urge you to consider booking in. Runnning book hand is a very good script to have in your repertoire, it is a lovely script, quite versatile and not too difficult.
The next Lettering Course commences on 2nd September, Rustica with Valerie Keevers. This is historically a very interesting and important script, so again, do consider booking in for this as it is not often taught.
Workshop Bookings: Please email your booking and payment information (including the code) to Meril Bowyer at
meril@bowyer.com.au or post to PO Box 714 Caringbah 1495. Direct debit details are available if you prefer to pay electronically.

25th Anniversary : Next year we will be celebrating our 25th Anniversary which is quite an achievement for a small organisation. We would welcome your suggestions as to how to mark this occasion both artistically and socially. Please put your thinking caps on and if you have any brilliant ideas send them off to our President. Patricia patriciamoody1@bigpond.com
Magazine: An e-magazine will be coming out in September, if you have anything to contribute or have seen an interesting article on the web please email it to Patricia patriciamoody1@bigpond.com
Word of the Month: it is pleasing to see some of newer members taking part in this. It is a challenge to do something interesting with just one word but we are receiving some very interesting and imaginative pieces of work. You can of course write that one word as many times as you like. Keep up the good work and those of you who have not yet participated do consider it, you can join in any time. Just remember the criteria. The word for September is rhythm. Have fun!
Social Activities: Seven of us went to the Maritime Museum on Monday to view the Mary Rose Scroll which was most interesting and hopefully it will remain on display. An enormous amount of work went into it and a great feather in the cap of those Southscibes who completed it. Thanks to Mirielle for arranging our visit. Afterwards we had a very nice lunch in Darling Harbour.
Out next social activity is the tour of the QVB is confirmed for Monday September 14th. The time to be advised but will be around 10.30/11 am followed by brunch/lunch. Mirielle will check and confirm time.
A tour of Victoria Barracks is proposed for early next year – probably March.
Calliart: The next Calliart is on the 12th September - a simply sewn pamphlet book with a folded cover which is a handy size

July Meeting Summary

Dear Members and followers,

Here is the summary from the July meeting:

CALLIGRAPHY SOUTHSCIBES SUMMARY for JULY 2015

Workshops: The next workshop is Embossing with Patricia Moody on Saturday 18th July. This workshop is now full as we are holding it at Club East and the room being quite small we had to restrict numbers. Apologies for this if you were intending to book in. W
Workshops 2016: Pat has spoken to Colleen Little who unfortunately is unable to commit to a
workshop next year at this time. However it is possible she could be available towards the end of the year. Some other ideas were discussed and we have some exciting things in the pipeline. If you have any ideas about what you would like to have as workshops next year please contact the Workshop Coordinator or the President with your thoughts, it is your society and we would like your input.
Workshop Bookings: Please email your booking and payment information (including the code)
to Meril Bowyer at
meril@bowyer.com.au or post to PO Box 714 Caringbah 1495. Direct debit details are available if you prefer to pay electronically.
Membership: We are pleased to welcome another new member, Colleen Collings, which brings
our current membership up to 24 and 5 life members.
Social Activities: On Monday 3rd August we will be visiting the Mary Rose Exhibition We will
meet at the Maritime Museum at 10am with coffee/lunch afterwards. Please let Mirielle know if you are coming, family, friends and partners are all welcome.
A tour of the QVB was also discussed and either the 7th or 14th September was suggested with a high tea afterwards. The cost for the tour is $15 .The date will be confirmed at a later time. Please put these dates in your diaries and consider joining us.

Survey: Cathy approached Linda who advised she is no longer involved. Cathy will have a look at it when time permits.

Monthly Project: Don’t forget the monthly project, so far there has been a disappointing response to July so please consider joining in, in August. The word for August is August” so put on your thinking caps and see what you can do. You dont need to do a quote, we would like just the single word Below is a reminder of the criteria.
The only criteria is A5 size landscape with a 4 cm margin on the left-hand side. This is with
a view of perhaps making your individual pieces into a small book at a later date. Apart from that you can do what you like any paper, any colour, background or no background, let you imagination run wild!

At the next Calliart session after the end of each month you can bring your letter to show it off and remember to send Cathy a photograph for the blog. Calliart: The next Calliart is on the 8th August when Cathy will be showing us the Neuland alphabet. This is not difficult and very versatile so please consider coming. The details will be on the blog.

Cathy has been contacted re CreARTivity for next year, it will be held in Cook Park at Kyeema. Glenis, Cathy and Gloria attended it this year and were very busy so it was decided it was worthwhile to be there again next year. The proposed dates are Saturday 9th April or Sunday 10th April. The Sunday would be more suitable for us. Cathy and Glenis have once again volunteered but if you feel like volunteering for a couple of hours I am sure they would be delighted.

Next Committee meeting: 8th August Penny Laver
