The
world of philately is a rich source of heraldic imagery, especially on
postage stamps. Philatelic covers, especially those commemorating the
anniversary of an institution, can also often feature heraldic or
quasi-heraldic images. In this well-illustrated presentation David
Phillips, retired lawyer and librarian and prolific author on heraldic
and vexillological topics will discuss just some of the 4300 philatelic
covers in his collection which include heraldic material. It is a
lecture that will be of interest to heraldists and philatelists alike.
David F Phillips describes himself as ?an American dilettante, amateur scholar, heraldist, retired lawyer, retired librarian, Buddhist and harmless eccentric?. He grew up in New York, was educated at Columbia University and the University of Pennsylvania Law School. He has spent most of his adult life in San Francisco, where he continues to live in an active and busy retirement. He has written numerous articles on heraldry and flags, and has edited or written several books on heraldic themes, including Emblems of the Indian States and The Double Eagle.
