Here is the summary from our June Meeting:
Workshops: The next workshop is Modern Carolingian with
Patricia Moody. Please consider
attending this workshop, the script is a beautiful one and very useful as
Patricia will be putting a modern interpretation on it. The workshop is well
booked but we would love to see some new faces in attendance as well as the
ever faithful attendees without whom we could not continue.
Workshops 2016: It was agreed that it is good to have a vising tutor particularly to
stretch the more experienced members but at the same time someone who would be
empathetic to less experienced participants. It was decided that Colleen Little
would be ideal and Pat will make an initial approach to her to see if she would
be available and what she could offer.
If you have any ideas about
what you would like to have as workshops next year please contact the Workshop
Coordinator or the President with your thoughts.
It was decided, after some
discussion that it is better to have the lettering courses over two terms as 6
weeks is too short. So for next year we will trial that format ie, there will
be two topics held over 2 terms being 12 weeks in total.
There was some concern that
it was a big commitment for one tutor to be available for that whole time and
perhaps a different tutor could do the second term. However it was generally
felt, particularly among those who are students in the courses that a single
tutor is preferable. So it was agreed that should the need arise, due to travel
or illness that a substitute tutor would step in as needed on an informal
basis.
It was also agreed that we
could introduce an early bird payment discount if students paid for both terms
at the beginning. The fee structure would be $160 for members (instead of $200)
and $200 for non – members (instead of $240)
For weekend workshops and
Calliart the format will remain the same.
Workshop Bookings: Please email your booking and payment information (including the code)
to Meril Bowyer at
meril@bowyer.com.au or post
to PO Box 714 Caringbah 1495. Direct debit details are available if you prefer
to pay electronically.
Magazine:
There was a typo in the last summary for which I apologise, the newsletter will
be coming out quarterly not bi-monthly. The editors would love to have any contributions
you may like to make. If you come across an interesting web site or article
email the address off to Cathy. The newsletter will start in September.
Membership:
There have been 3 renewals since last meeting.
Currently there are 23 members with 5 life members. It is a
disappointing drop in membership but encouraging to see we have 3 new members,
2 of whom are from Pat’s Jannali evening class.
Social Activities: Mirielle will
contact the Maritime Museum for information regarding tours and times for the
Mary Rose and report back at the next meeting. There was a brief discussion re
a tour of the Mitchell Library and the QVB but this is on hold until we have
the details of the Mary Rose.
It was also suggested that it
might be nice to have high tea somewhere, possibly at Carlton House. Mirielle
will investigate.
Monthly Project
To try to encourage more
participation from members without making it too taxing on time or effort we
have decided to introduce a monthly project.
We ask that you write one word – the word of the month will be given to
you. We will start in July with the word winter.
The only criteria is A5 size landscape with a 4 cm margin on the
left-hand side. This is with a view of perhaps making your individual
pieces into a small book at a later date. Apart from that you can do what you
like – any paper, any colour, background or no background, let you imagination
run wild!
At the next Calliart session
after the end of each month you can bring your letter to show it off and/or
send Cathy a photograph for the blog.
Please consider participating, it won’t take much of your time and we
really want to encourage members who we don’t see very often to feel more part
of Calligraphy Southscribes. .
Calliart: We had a great afternoon with Art Deco
lettering, very ably guided by Glenis. It was a very popular topic with over a
dozen participants, so the room was buzzing. If you have not attended one of
these afternoons I really encourage you to do so as they are informal, great
fun and gives you a chance to have a chat with people and get to know everyone.
Particularly if you are a new member. The next Calliart on July 11th
is Japanese card making, one of which will be particularly good for children.
The details will be on the blog.
Next Committee meeting: 11th July
